Second Joint ICUIL/ICFA Workshop on
“High Power Laser Technology for Future Accelerators”

As Chair of the Joint Task Force on Future Applications of Laser Acceleration, it is my great pleasure to invite you to the 2nd Joint International Committee for Future Accelerators & the International Committee on Ultra Intense Lasers Workshop. The aim of this second workshop is to build on the first workshop held at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany from April 8-10, 2010 and to continue the work on outlining a roadmap for advancing laser technology to meet the challenge of future accelerators that use or rely on very high average power lasers (>> kW) and that are beyond state-of-the-art.

As was the case for the first workshop, the primary purpose of gathering together this select group of researchers, is to provide a forum where accelerator and laser science and technology can be discussed, in support of the great challenges that lay ahead in developing future technology for photon and particle based tools of the 21st century.

The goals of the workshop include:

      (a) Detailed evaluation and validation of the requirements developed at the first workshop for laser technology, as documented in the white paper. This will include further discussions to understand the trade-offs that can be made in accelerator design/requirements to ease the requirements on the lasers.

     (b) Identify bottlenecks in laser technology and how to address them

     (c)  Develop a roadmap for the laser technology that will meet the accelerator demands

     (d) Write a technical document summarizing the findings

I hope we will have a productive meeting with lots of interactions and brainstorming and that we will make headway towards the development of high average power lasers for future accelerators.
